Advanced technologies for coastal erosion

The project aims to apply innovative approaches, such as multi-platform surveys, numerical modelling, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for the integrated use in coastal zone management. The project 6.1 has foreseen the implementation of an early warning system for storm surges through the application of coastal modelling and machine learning approaches at pilot sites identified on the Ligurian coast. The method is based on the offshore wave parameters and coastal morphological features. Furthermore, the development of a 1D laser scanner system for wave run-up survey (product 6.2) is planned to integrate and complete product 6.1. This system will integrate the storm surge early warning system, also as a field validation system. Finally, Product 6.3 focuses on the development of remote multisensing technology to survey the coastline from the sea. This approach will enable the collection of data for the creation of informative multilayer maps, which are essential tools for analysing coastal morphology and its temporal evolution through repeated surveys.

Product 6.2 Realization of a combined camera and 1D laser scanner system (linear) for an early warning system of storm surges

The project involves the deployment of a combined camera and 1D laser scanner system at a pilot site along the Ligurian coast, designed to complement the storm surge early warning systems developed as product 6.1.

Product 6.3 Hi-resolution digital terrain models for coastal status survey

The system developed within this product combines advanced remote multi-sensing technologies to survey the coastline directly from the sea. By integrating laser scanning, photogrammetry, and multi-beam interferometry, it produces highly detailed, multi-layered maps that describe both the subaerial (emerged) and submarine (submerged) portions of the coastal zone — a key strength of this approach …
